CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âRight, I must get back to Helen,â says Robyn. âDid Primrose mention the idea of a wedding marquee at the farm?â
âShe did. Fantastic idea. Thank you. Can we speak later?â
âOf course. See you later, Ellie.â Robyn goes off to join her granddaughter, and I suddenly catch sight of Fen trying to attract my attention.
I hurry over to her stall. âWhatâs going on?â
She shakes her head and points across the green. I look over and see Harry and Jaz locked in what looks like a serious discussion.
Fen sighs. âI think she might have told him.â
I frown. âOr maybe not. Youâd think if sheâd mentioned her endometriosis, heâd be sympathetic, not annoyed at her.â
âTrue. God, I wish theyâd get it sorted.â
âSheâs coming over,â mutters Fen, quickly pretending sheâs tidying a stack of leaflets.
Jaz hurries across, her face red and blotchy, with Harry hot on her tail.
âI just donât understand,â he calls, his face a picture of bewilderment. âIf you were to win an award, Iâd be right there by your side, no question. Nothing, barring something genuinely unavoidable, would stop me being there.â
Jazâs face crumples and she closes her eyes briefly. âI would if I could. But I just canât.â
âHey, listen, how about I make a deal with you?â Harry points at the nearest fairground attraction. âIf I manage to ring the bell by hitting this thing with the mallet, you have to promise to answer my questions.â Heâs smiling, trying to joke Jaz out of her mood, but Jaz is still shaking her head.
Harry grabs the mallet anyway, grinning at the crowd gathered around. âIâm doing this for that gorgeous woman over there, so it had better be good.â
People laugh and turn to Jaz, who does her best to smile.
âRight, here goes!â
Harry lays down the mallet and rolls up his sleeves, prolonging the drama for the watching crowd. Then he stops. His brow is dotted with perspiration and his vulnerability is on show for all to see as he throws Jaz an adoring and pleading look that would melt even the hardest of hearts.
In that moment, I donât think heâs seeing anyone else. Itâs just him and Jaz.
Then he raises the mallet, pausing a second or two in mid-air before swinging it down with a huge grunt, taking out all his frustration in that one giant hammer blow.
Of course the bell rings. And everyone cheers.
But Harry is just staring at Jaz.
She looks right back at him and I can see a little smile starting to break through. Iâm willing her to run into Harryâs arms. I would if Zak laid bare his soul for me in public like that, for goodnessâ sake! But the instant Harry takes a step towards her, she shakes her head and starts stumbling away.
âHey, will you talk to me?â Harry catches her up and reaches for her shoulder.
Jaz swings round, jerking herself away from his grasp. âLook, Iâm sorry, Harry. But I told you. Iâve already promised Summer Iâll see her that night. Sheâll be devastated if I change my plans.
